How to Choose the Right Bandsaw Blade

Choosing the right bandsaw blade helps improve cut quality, blade life, production speed, and machine stability. The best blade depends on the material, machine size, blade width, tooth pattern, and whether the blade is used for sawmill, hardwood, pallet, or wood plank production.

1. Start with the material

  • Sawmill and hardwood: usually require strong blade backing, correct width, and stellite-tipped performance for longer service life.
  • Pallet and wood plank production: often need reliable tracking, stable tension, and regular sharpening to keep output consistent.
  • MDF and panel board: require the correct tooth geometry and a sharp edge to reduce rough cutting and excess machine load.
  • Aluminium and non-ferrous cutting: should be confirmed by blade type, machine speed, and application before ordering.

2. Check blade length and width

For replacement bandsaw blades, confirm the blade loop length, blade width, thickness, and tooth pitch. If the old blade marking is missing, use the bandsaw blade length calculator on the stellite bandsaw blade service page as an estimate, then confirm with TSSR before ordering.

3. Match tooth pitch to cutting work

Tooth pitch affects chip clearance, cutting smoothness, and cutting speed. Wider spacing is normally used when chip clearance is important, while finer teeth may be used where a smoother finish is needed. Final selection should match the machine and material.

4. Consider stellite-tipped blades for demanding work

Stellite-tipped bandsaw blades are commonly used for hardwood, sawmill, and abrasive production conditions where edge life and heat resistance matter. Blade condition, application, and machine setup should be checked before confirming a new blade or service job.

5. Service before performance drops too far

  • Send blades for sharpening before they become heavily worn.
  • Check for missing tips, cracks, uneven cutting, and tension issues.
  • For damaged or non-standard blades, request a quote before ordering.
  • For recurring production use, contact TSSR about repeat service planning.
