Choose The Right Bandsaw Blade

Choosing the right bandsaw blade can make the difference between a clean, efficient cut and a frustrating, costly mistake. Whether you're processing meat, cutting timber, or working with metal, the blade you select directly impacts your productivity, cut quality, and blade lifespan. Here's what you need to know.

1. Know Your Material

The first step is identifying what you're cutting:

  • Meat & Bone — Requires stainless-resistant blades with fine teeth designed for food-grade applications. Hygiene and corrosion resistance are critical.
  • Wood & Timber — Needs blades with wider tooth spacing (lower TPI) to clear sawdust efficiently and prevent clogging.
  • Metal — Requires bi-metal or carbide-tipped blades with high TPI for smooth, precise cuts without overheating.

2. Understand TPI (Teeth Per Inch)

TPI determines the smoothness and speed of your cut:

  • Low TPI (2–6) — Faster, rougher cuts. Best for thick wood or soft materials.
  • Medium TPI (6–14) — Balanced speed and finish. Good for general-purpose cutting.
  • High TPI (14–32) — Slower, smoother cuts. Ideal for metal, thin materials, or precision work.

A common rule: always have at least 3 teeth in contact with the material at any time for a stable cut.

  • Wide blades (25–200mm / 1”–7⅝") — Better for straight cuts and resawing thick stock.

For industrial straight cuts (e.g., meat processing or timber resawing), a wider blade gives better tracking and stability.

  • Carbon Steel — Affordable and flexible. Good for wood and light-duty use.
  • Bi-Metal — High-speed steel teeth welded to a flexible carbon steel back. Durable and versatile for metal and hardwood.
  • Stellite-Tipped — Cobalt-chromium alloy tips that offer exceptional heat and wear resistance. Ideal for hardwoods, abrasive materials, and high-speed industrial cutting where blade life is critical.
  • Carbide-Tipped — Premium option for abrasive materials, hardwoods, and high-volume industrial use. Longest lifespan.

5. Consider Tooth Set and Pattern

  • Raker set — One tooth left, one right, one straight. Good for general cutting.
  • Wavy set — Teeth alternate in groups. Ideal for thin materials and metal tubing.
  • Alternate set — Simple left-right pattern. Common for wood cutting.

6. Don't Forget Blade Maintenance

Even the best blade won't last if it's not maintained properly:

  • Keep blade tension correctly set — too loose causes drift, too tight causes breakage.
  • Clean blades regularly to remove resin, grease, or bone residue.
  • Sharpen blades before they become dull — cutting with a dull blade strains your machine and produces poor results.
  • Inspect for cracks or missing teeth before each use.
